Today's Notes:
Kateryna Bondarenko's straight set victory over No. 8 seed Dinara Safina is her first win against the Russian born player in seven career matches. This is the second time Bondarenko has played in the East West Bank Classic presented by Herbalife and her first since 2005. Two years ago, she advanced to the third round before losing to Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-4.

This is Maria Kirilenko's third appearance at the East West Bank Classic presented by Herbalife. In 2005 she bowed out with a second round loss to Maria Sharapova and last year she lost in the first round to Serena Williams.

The doubles team of Su-Wei Hseih and Alla Kudryavtseva have been replaced in the draw by Ji Chunmei and Sheng-nan. Kudryavtseva had to withdraw with a right thoracic dysfunction.

This was the fourth time Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza have met in their career. Hingis won the first two outings while Mirza has now was the last two matches. It is the first time they have squared off in 2007 after playing against each other three times last year. Tonight's Mirza-Hingis singles match lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes.

Maria Kirilenko Quotes
Today, I did not play great really good, but I won. Maybe it was windy a little bit. I think the surface was a little slower than last week. I did a good job in the end and I did the right thing. You cannot always play your best tennis. I have a blister on my toe.

I feel more confident on the court and I know what to do. I think the extra practicing is helping me. This week I feel perfect. Last week I had cramps but this week, I feel fresh.

Bartoli Quotes
At the end, it was a lack of being able to convert the big points. It was difficult for me to handle her serve at the end. She deserved the victory. I hope the next tournament I can play better straight from the beginning of the match.

When you win a lot of matches and you are used to playing the big points, then you are confident. When you don't play the big points, you think a little too much and I think it makes a difference. She (Kirikenko) was able to serve very well today and came out with big shots. I think it is hard to come with a bye and play straight away. People that play in the first round can get settled and get used to the conditions like the wind. I am sure I will come back in the next tournament that I will play.

It is the first time in my life I am playing with a bye in each tournament and I need to get used to it. I am sure I will be fine.

My plan is to enter and play in Toronto and New Haven. I am real happy to play on hard court. Even if I lost today, I am happy to play in the U.S. My mom is coming next week and I think it will help to have another person from my family here. She knows me for a long time and it is nice for your mom to be with you. It is nice to have one more person that is helping me all day long.

Martina Hingis Quotes
(About knowing of other seeds losing). I was in the gym in the morning and then I fell asleep after lunch so I did not know.

Tomorrow is another day, I will play some doubles and enjoy that. I enjoy the teamwork. I have not had that much time since Wimbledon to get better. A little tickle here or a little tickle there. These hard courts do it to you...

The third set was more mental today. She (Mirza) was more fresh.

At the end I still hung in there. She got a little nervous after the double fault...

I definitely played better in the second set. You cannot let players like her run away after the first set. I played better tennis in the second and the third set.

(On Mirza) You know that she has a big forehand. She had a good couple of weeks. She made the finals at Stanford and she had a solid tournament last week I knew it was going to be hard playing her tonight.

Sania Mirza Quotes
When you are playing Martina Hingis, you cannot expect to roll through 6-0 in the third. In looking back, going from 2-3 to 5-3 (in the third) is the reason why I won. It is great. Obviously I believed I was going to win the match when I stepped on the court. Today when I went on and believed I would win.

When you are playing in a big stadium, in a big tournament like this and against one of the best players in the world you are going to be nervous. I think she went for broke on all of the match points and in the end she just missed it by an inch or so. I felt I was in control for most of the time. When you are playing Martina she makes you run.

When you play her you probably run more than in any other match. Today, I feel like I am a more complete player. I served better today. I tried to get the first point in each game.

I would be lying if I said I was not tired. Every time I step on the court I have to give my best. You have to be mentally strong. My coach always says tired is mental. I feel like I can pull through. I am playing doubles tomorrow.

She is one of the quickest and one of the fittest players on the tour. To dig deep and beat her 6-4 in the third you feel great when you come off the court. You tell your mind if you can do it once you can do it again.
