NFLPA Collegiate Bowl
The NFL Players Association proudly announces the return of the third annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl to be held January 18, 2014 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Head Coach Dick Vermeil will return to defend the National Team’s titles from 2012 and 2013. He will face first-time American Team Head Coach Denny Green.
The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl is in its second year of a multi-year contract with ESPN and will be aired live on ESPN2. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. ET. In addition, American and National Team practices on January 15 and 16 will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The game and practices will also be streamed live online via WatchESPN. The game returns to the greater Los Angeles area at StubHub Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills.
Today’s announcements coincide with the launch of a new NFLPA Collegiate Bowl website (http://collegiate.nflpa.com/) as well as the official unveiling of the Big Board: a list of NFL Draft-eligible prospects that the game’s head coaches and NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Recruiting Department will keep an eye on this season. Tony Softli will serve as the Director of College Recruiting and will oversee recruiters Jerry Shay (West Coast Region), Johnny Meads (Midwest Region) and Josh Buchanan (Small Colleges).
The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl experience is much more than a game for the participating players. For one week preceding the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, participants will receive an in-depth introduction to their future union – the primary resource for players for information on the business of football and how to succeed in the NFL and in their post-football careers. Additionally, pro football players and coaching legends will work with the game’s future stars, giving them first-hand insight on what it takes to win on and off of the field.
The week culminates in one of the nation’s top showcases for draft-eligible talent. The all-star game will also feature health and safety measures that the NFLPA has made a priority, including independent sideline concussion experts.
“The game was a great way for us to experience what life would be like in the NFL,” said Buffalo Bills quarterback Jeff Tuel. “Working with professional coaches such as Coach O’Shea and others personally helped me in my development to play at the next level. I also really enjoyed the game week activities and the information the NFLPA provided us in preparing for the NFL off the field.”
“It was a tremendous experience for me,” said Seattle Seahawks tight end Luke Willson. “The game gave me an opportunity to display my talents for the next level, and from a player’s standpoint, it was good to interact with players from different schools and to learn from professional coaches. I really valued my interactions with the former players who coached us on the field and helped us prepare for what to expect at the professional level off the field.”
