Nationwide drum off featured Carson, Inglewood, Dominguez, Jordan, Compton and Centennial High Schools, plus a Tribute to the Legends of Hip Hop honoring Mc Lyte and YoYo.
The nation's best high school drum lines competed in Carson at AEG Facilities' Home Depot Center on Sat., Oct. 27 at the 2012 Battle of the High School Marching Bands Drum Off, powered by Edison International.
After a one-year hiatus, the national competition produced by The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation returned to Carson. For the first time ever, the event, sponsored by Edison International, exclusively featured high school drum lines in a 'Drum Off' at the 8,000-seat outdoor stadium in Carson, Calif. on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills. The finalists were judged by a panel of celebrity and music industry executives, and battled it out for $5,000 and prizes. Celebrity judges panel included: Shelia E., Pop Price and Nisan Stewart, plus band directors and music educations from Coppin State University (Baltimore, Md.), Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio) and Alain Lock High School (Watts, Calif.)
All proceeds from the Battle of the High School Marching Bands benefited The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation. Since 2005, the foundation has donated more than $120,000 in support of music and arts education to local and national high school marching band programs.
The seven best high school drum lines from across the United States participated:
Carson High School (Carson, Calif.), 2006 and 2008 champion Inglewood High School (Inglewood, Calif.), Dominguez High School (Compton, Calif.), David Starr Jordan High School (Long Beach, Calif.), Compton High School (Compton, Calif.), Centennial High School (Compton, Calif.) and Rickards High School (Tallahassee, Fla.)
The 2012 Battle of the High School Marching Bands Drum Off winner Rickards High School from Tallahassee, Florida took home the the $5,000 and prizes.
There was also a special performances by members of the hit movie Drumline, the Percussion Kings; Harmony Project "Big Bang" Regional Youth Orchestra; writer and spoken word artist Treesje Powers. The event was hosted by the No U Ain't Radio Crew (Rhea Bea, Doc, and Big Pwee).
Edison International was the presenting sponsor of the 2012 Battle of the High School Marching Bands Drum Off. Other sponsors included 93.5 KDAY, BCE Clothing, Doubletree Hilton, Embassy Suites LAX, U.S. Army, JetBlue Airways, Metro PCS, Code 4 Media Group and the Bernard & Shirley Kinsey Foundation for Arts and Education.
